Countries affected by Ebola : You should know it.

Ebola haemorrhagic fever or Ebola virus Disease commonly known as Ebola is a viral disease caused by the ebolavirus. The ebolavirus gets transmitted from wild animals and gets spread among humans by transmission among one person to another. It is a fatal disease in humans.
Major outbreak of the virus has been witnessed in countries like Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Countries that are currently under the effect of Ebola are:
  • Guinea: It was the first country to witness Ebola in the current outbreak in West Africa. World Health Organisation is experiencing a number of challenges like tracing contact and engaging the community. Resistance from the community is being faced and hence measures to control the spread of the virus are getting interfered.
  • Sierra Leone: After the outbreak in Guinea, bordering countries also started getting affected. Sierra Leone was the first among such countries where first case of Ebola occurred in May 2014. Though the cases of the disease started declining by December that year, new cases started appearing in January 2015. Ebola was declared “widespread” by WHO in early February. Until March, 60-100 new cases every week were coming into picture. WHO declared that the treatment capacity was exceeding demand.
Previously affected countries:
  • Liberia: Liberia was among the worst affected countries in West African Ebola outbreak. The transmission of Ebola declined significantly in March 2015 and the last case was released from treatments. Liberia was declared Ebola free on May 2015 after 42 days of burial of last laboratory-confirmed case.
In the scenario of outbreak, travelling to such locations is generally not advisable unless necessary. As there is no specific treatment or approved medicine for Ebola and affected people generally die, hence it is very important to take preventive steps for Ebola.

Diagnosis of Ebola

It is very difficult to diagnose Ebola in a person who has been infected by the virus for only a few days. The reason is that the early symptoms like fever are non-specific and are often observed in patients with more common diseases like malaria and typhoid fever. However, once a person has been diagnosed with early symptoms of Ebola, the person should be isolated and it is very important to notify the public health authorities about the case. If a person has come in direct contact with: Bodily fluids or blood of an Ebola infected person who has died Items that were handled by an Ebola infected person and are contaminated with the blood or body fluids of the sick person Semen from a man who has just recovered from Ebola To confirm infection, samples from the patient can be taken and tested.
