Ebola Outbreak : Treatment for Ebola | Is there treatment for Ebola ?

Ebola is a rare but deadly virus that causes bleeding inside and outside the body. As the virus spreads through the body, it damages the immune system and organs. Ultimately, it causes levels of blood-clotting cells to drop. This leads to severe, uncontrollable bleeding. Then ultimately according to sources 90% of the infected people die. As yet even today we have no specific treatment for ebola.

Surely, there are some ways in which we can minimize the effects but even these have side effects. Well, some of the symptoms indicating the suffering from virus are high fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, sore throat, weakness, stomach pain and lack of appetite. Sometimes it's hard to tell if a person has Ebola from the symptoms alone. Doctors may test to rule out other diseases like cholera or malaria. Tests of blood and tissues also can diagnose Ebola. One suffering from Ebola is immediately isolated from public to prevent the spread of disease. Time is the only cure for Ebola otherwise the day is not away that turned to Ebola epidemic There are currently no proven treatment options that can kill the Ebola virus, and there is no vaccine that can prevent an infection. Some Ebola research scientists have focused their efforts on developing a new vaccine. This may prevent hemorrhagic fever from developing, but it will not be a cure for Ebola. The vaccine is currently being tested in clinical trials.  The Ebola treatment focuses on providing relief of symptoms as the body fights the virus. Some of the supportive care practices acts as a treatment:-

  • Antibiotics to prevent secondary infections from bacteria

  • A very good nursing care for the infected person

  • Medications to control fever, help the blood clot, and maintain blood pressure

  • Intravenous fluids to maintain fluids and electrolytes

  • Oxygen for breathing and yet other devices which help

However, some are able to recover. The reason behind recovery is just the immune which fights back against virus and prevents death. Anyways it is known that Ebola victims usually have not developed a significant immune response to the virus at the time of death. Yet, then came some scientists with new vaccines for Ebola. They are yet not proven to be accurately safe but yes, the vaccine in future can be a great cure for the virus. Some Canadian scientists researched and experimented the vaccine on nonhuman living beings and found there were no adverse harmful effects. So, the vaccine is now not proved to be safe for human use. But Vaccines have protected nonhuman primates. Immunization takes six months, which impedes the counter-epidemic use of the vaccines. Know more facts about Ebola virus .

The World Health Organization convened an expert meeting of bioethicists on 11 August 2014 to consider the implications of making the experimental treatment more widely available. So yes, now we have experimental treatments but we can come to a conclusion of having a very specified vaccine or treatment which will assure the immunity from Ebola virus. However, only through experiments, successful immunity has been witnessed in the past among humans also. Yet another promising treatment for Ebola Virus relies on antisense technology.

Causes and Symptoms of Ebola

The virus belongs to the viral family Filoviridae. The origin of the virus is likely from African fruit bats. Since the virus is transmitted from animals to humans, the virus is also called as zootic virus. The virus can also be transmitted from one human to another. The following animals can transmit the Ebola virus: Chimpanzees Forest antelopes Gorillas Monkeys Porcupines Since people may come in contact with these animals, the virus can get transmitted from the blood or any body fluid of these animals. Point to be considered is that the virus gets transmitted only by coming in direct contact with the body fluids of someone who has the virus and not by air or touch alone. Bodily fluids that may carry the virus may be through: blood diarrhea breast milk feces saliva semen sweat urine vomit Virus transmission can take place through eyes, nose, broken skin, mouth or sexual contact. Workers working in healthcare centers often deal with bodily fluids and blood and ...

History of Ebola

Overview of Ebola: Ebola is a viral fever that is extremely sever and in most of the case a fatal illness. It is the Filoviridae viral member and found in the family RNA viruses. Ebola name was proposed for this virus as it was first found in the places beside the river Ebola. The fever rapidly starts attacking the endothelial cells, the cells that forms the lining for the blood vessels. Thus disorder in the coagulation of blood is noticed in the affected body. Due to inefficiency in blood coagulation and damage in the blood vessel walls the patient undergoes hypovolemic shocks or drastic drop in blood pressure level. History of Ebola: The disease was first spread in the year 1976, in the places like Sudan and Zaire. The symptoms were hemorrhagic fever. Each viral strains or outbreak affected about 284 people. But due to the remoteness of the place the viral was restricted to within that region and did not spread to larger areas. Else the outbreak could have been more tremendou...

Countries affected by Ebola : You should know it.

Ebola haemorrhagic fever or Ebola virus Disease commonly known as Ebola is a viral disease caused by the ebolavirus. The ebolavirus gets transmitted from wild animals and gets spread among humans by transmission among one person to another. It is a fatal disease in humans. Major outbreak of the virus has been witnessed in countries like Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Countries that are currently under the effect of Ebola are: Guinea: It was the first country to witness Ebola in the current outbreak in West Africa. World Health Organisation is experiencing a number of challenges like tracing contact and engaging the community. Resistance from the community is being faced and hence measures to control the spread of the virus are getting interfered. Sierra Leone: After the outbreak in Guinea, bordering countries also started getting affected. Sierra Leone was the first among such countries where first case of Ebola occurred in May 2014. Though the cases of the disease started dec...
